BECOME AN ALLY, ADVOCATE, MENTOR FOR YOUTH
We are CaLiCo Youth Services, and we are a nonprofit organization that works with middle school students from the Redwood City School District (in the Bay Area of California). We provide a variety of services including mental health resources, tutoring, and mentorship to our students.
We want to build a network of caring mentors that our students can rely on throughout their school experience, and beyond. We can’t do it without volunteers like you!
What is the commitment?
Two mandatory training sessions (2-3 hours each)
Meetings with your buddy for the 2020-21 academic year, 1-2 times a week. Meetings are usually in a public place, like a local library, but during the pandemic, we will be meeting virtually. Meetings are not very structured, you can discuss homework, video games, or the last Warriors game – whatever works best for you and your student!
1-2 fun group events/activities with your buddy to be scheduled (these will be flexible)
One week online “meet your buddy” event, week of August 3rd Monday-Friday 9am - 12pm. If you cannot make it for all or part of this event, we are flexible!
Will this cost me money?
Nope! We will cover the cost of your travel to and from events and meetings. We also cover the cost for educational materials that you might use for tutoring. We would just like you to donate your time and love!
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for high school students, college students, and recent college graduates with a Bay Area connection. We want mentors who are experienced enough to be role models, but young enough to relate and have common interests to our students. Feel free to pass this message around to anyone else you know, who may be interested!
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old, or accompanied by an adult. Younger volunteers need to find an adult to accompany them. We will ask you (or your adult) to get fingerprinted and take a Tuberculosis test. (The Tuberculosis test is not urgent. It can wait until pandemic restrictions have lifted, and we are meeting students in person again.)
I’m nervous, will I be a good role model?
Don’t be nervous! The other mentors and CaLiCo administrators will be with you every step of the way! We just want you to be your authentic self, and make a connection with your student.
We would love to have you!
